This special will mark the first time that Adventure Time will be shown in a mini-series format.

That being the case, it is unknown whether or not the miniseries will be canon to the show's current story arc.

It is possible that this is the resulting product of the Adventure Time movie that was planned for a season 5 premiere, but was later scrapped.
